LEXINGTON - Congressman Andy Barr today announced an extension to participate in the Congressional Art Competition to all high school students in the Sixth District. The contest, “An Artistic Discovery,” began in 1982 as a way to recognize and encourage the artistic talent of our country’s youth.
Students who wish to participate must complete the participation form found on Congressman Barr’s website and return it to the Lexington office no later than Friday, April 11, 2014. For more information participants are encouraged to visit https://barr.house.gov/services/art-competition.
The competition encourages and recognizes the rich artistic talents of young Americans. Students are encouraged to submit various styles and types of art, ranging from paintings and drawings to photography and mixed media pieces. Each student will be granted the opportunity to submit one piece of artwork. The artwork must be original in design, no more than 15 lbs. and no larger than 28” X 28” X 4.” The artwork must also be prepared for hanging.
The overall winner will receive two free airline tickets from Southwest Airlines to Washington, D.C. and will have his or her piece displayed in the United States Capitol for the next year. It will represent the Sixth Congressional District of Kentucky among hundreds of pieces from other congressional districts throughout the county.
Artwork must be submitted to Congressman Barr's Lexington District Office with the student information and release form found on Congressman Barr’s website no later than Monday, April 14, 2014.
A Congressional Art Competition Reception will be hosted in the Living Arts and Science Center, 362 N Martin Luther King Blvd, Lexington, KY, on April 24, 2014 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Artists, families, and friends are welcome to attend. During this reception, artists will be able to pick-up their artwork. If the artist is unable to attend, they can coordinate a time to pick-up their artwork at the Lexington District Office by May 2, 2014.
