Barr Discusses Jobs, National Debt Crisis With Constituents

New Congressman Hears Broad Consensus that Economic Growth and Restraining Spending Must Be Top Priorities

January 30, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. – During his “Get to Know Your Congressman” meeting with his constituents in Frankfort yesterday, U.S. Rep. Andy Barr moderated a lively and informative discussion regarding America’s lagging economy and the $16.4 trillion national debt crisis.  Congressman Barr opened the meeting with a presentation which provided a number of illustrations regarding the national debt and its damaging effects on job creation today and the dangers it poses for future generations tomorrow.

“People from across the Sixth District have been telling me for more than three years to make job creation and ending Washington’s spending addiction my top priorities,” Rep. Barr said.  “With the news today that our economy is shrinking yet again, it’s clearer than ever that we won’t get Kentuckians back to work by raising taxes or mortgaging our children’s future.

“Congress raised taxes two days before I was sworn into office, and they have already spent the additional revenue,” Barr continued.  “Now, the President and his allies in Congress are trying to raise taxes again to fuel additional spending.  Instead of more taxes and more spending, Congress needs to reform how Washington works, which requires fixing broken programs and making tough choices.

“I thank everyone who attended last night, and I look forward to holding similar meetings across the Sixth District in the near future.”
