Washington, D.C.– U.S. Congressman Andy Barr (KY-06) released the following statement after voting against giving House Democrats a blank check to bankrupt America:

“Since the 117th Congress began, House Democrats have governed in a totally partisan fashion.  Less than one month after the President took office, claiming he wanted to unify the country, and on the heels of five bipartisan COVID-19 packages in 2020, Congressional Democrats rammed through a $1.9 trillion stimulus bill on a party-line vote.  Democrats called this bill a “COVID-19 relief bill,” but less than 10% of the funding in the massive package went toward public health measures.  House Democrats’ payoff to progressives created historic inflation numbers that are crushing the middle-class and a debt crisis we confront today.

“Simply put, Democrats own this debt crisis.  I voted to raise the debt ceiling in 2019 on a bipartisan basis and that debt ceiling increase covered expenses incurred by the Trump Administration through January 20, 2021.  However, I will not give Congressional Democrats a blank check to bankrupt America by doubling down on their failed tax, borrow and spend policies and impose a $2.1 trillion tax increase on American job creators and families during a pandemic.”
