Washington, D.C. – Congressman Andy Barr (KY-06) released the following statement regarding President Donald Trump’s Nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to be an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court:

“Thank you President Donald Trump for nominating to the U.S. Supreme Court the Honorable Amy Coney Barrett, of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.  Judge Barrett, a respected member of the Notre Dame Law School faculty, has outstanding credentials, having earned her J.D., summa cum laude, from Notre Dame, where she was a Kiley Fellow, earned the Hoynes Prize, the Law School’s highest honor, and served as executive editor of the Notre Dame Law Review.  She clerked for Judge Laurence H. Silberman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and for Associate Justice Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Most importantly, as a federal judge and through her scholarship, she has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to interpreting the Constitution and laws according to their original meaning, recognizing that it is the duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be.  She understands the importance of the separation of powers to the preservation of liberty, the dangers of judicial activism and the limits of judicial power.  Accordingly, I strongly urge my Senate colleagues to confirm Judge Barrett to the nation’s highest Court without delay.”
