Washington, DC—U.S. Congressman Andy Barr (R-KY) voted for the SAVE America Act and wrote to U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, urging him to support the movement of the SAVE America Act. The SAVE America Act requires voter identification to cast a ballot in all elections. It also requires proof of American citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections.

“Voter ID is commonsense and is supported by over 80% of the American public, including a majority of Democrat voters,” Congressman Barr said following his vote. “If you need an ID to board a plane, open a bank account, or even to buy cold medicine, you should need an ID to vote in federal elections. Anyone who opposes voter ID to safeguard the integrity of our elections is anti-American.”

Congressman Barr’s letter to Senator McConnell read in-part:

“This marks the second time that the U.S. House of Representatives has acted to advance common sense voter identification and proof of citizenship requirements to strengthen the integrity of our federal elections. I write to urge you, in your role as Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, to expeditiously move the America Act through the Senate and to the President’s Desk.

“Democrats claim that this bill is about “voter suppression,” to the contrary, this is about voter protection. Fourteen states lack voter identification laws in elections, opening the door for abuse by illegal immigrants who are ineligible to vote in elections under federal law. Any illegal vote cast cancels out the vote of each Kentuckian that you and I represent.

“The SAVE America Act does not expand federal control; it passes constitutional muster and ensures the enforcement of existing constitutional and statutory requirements. Congress has not only the authority but the obligation to ensure that federal law governing federal elections is faithfully executed. The SAVE America Act addresses these gaps directly by requiring photo ID to cast a ballot, mandating documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for federal voter registration, requiring regular voter roll maintenance, and providing clear procedures to protect eligible voters from administrative discrepancies.”
