Washington, D.C. – Today, Representatives Andy Barr (R-KY), Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL), Gerry Connolly (D-VA), and Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA), co-chairs of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus, released the following statement congratulating Lai Ching-te on his election as the next president of Taiwan:
“As co-chairs of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus, we write to congratulate the people of Taiwan on their success in holding another free, fair, and transparent election.
The United States and Taiwan share many core values including a commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Our bilateral relationship has benefited the global community and is critical to prosperity, stability, and peace in the Indo-Pacific. The Taiwan Relations Act serves as the cornerstone of the U.S.-Taiwan relationship, facilitating decades of fruitful economic, security, and trade relations.
In the face of escalating threats to Taiwan’s democracy and security, it is imperative that the United States remains steadfast in support of the people of Taiwan and our shared commitment to democratic values. It is an honor to serve as co-chairs of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus and to celebrate yet another vibrant display of Taiwan’s thriving democracy. We look forward to working with President-elect Lai Ching-te to strengthen the U.S.-Taiwan relationship.”
