Washington, D.C.—U.S. Congressman Andy Barr (KY-06) released the following statement following his acceptance of the Award of Meritorious Achievement from the American Heart Association on behalf of his late-wife, Eleanor Carol Leavell Barr:
“I am honored to accept this award which recognizes Carol’s legacy as a champion for heart advocacy and the work that continues to be done in her memory,” said Congressman Barr. “I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the American Heart Association and CEO Nancy Brown for the support you have provided to the CAROL Act and for honoring Carol with this award.”
The CAROL Act unanimously passed the House of Representatives in December and is now in the U.S. Senate, where Senator Mitch McConnell and Senator Krysten Sinema are leading the bill. Over 25,000 Americans, predominately young women, die from valvular heart disease each year. The CAROL Act supports research and public awareness of valvular heart disease through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) with the aim of diminishing these numbers to prevent the tragedy of sudden cardiac death.
