Lexington, KY— U.S. Congressman Andy Barr (KY-06) is announcing a major, $4.1 million federal grant to upgrade Transit Authority of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (Lextran) buses. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Transit Administration will send this grant directly to the Transit Authority of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. Congressman Barr voted for the fiscal year (FY) 2021 Consolidated Appropriations Act passed in December of 2020, which provided the funding for this grant award.
“This federal grant will enhance public transportation in my district’s most urban population center where transit upgrades and enhancement are long overdue,” said Congressman Barr. “I voted for the federal funds used to provide this grant and I will continue to deliver federal resources to support critical projects in the Sixth District moving forward.”
“We are thrilled to learn our project was selected for the federal Bus & Bus Facilities grant award,” said Jill Barnett, Executive Director/General Manager of Lextran. “The federal funding supported by Congressman Barr will allow Lextran to make much needed investments in modernizing our fleet and deliver additional clean air benefits to the city.”
Lextran will receive funding to replace buses that have exceeded their useful life. These replacement vehicles will reduce maintenance costs and improve service reliability for residents in St. Martins Village, Galberith, and surrounding neighborhoods, including services to Lexington.
