This week, Congressman Andy Barr (KY-06) announced that with the help of his office the Department of Transportation awarded the City of Frankfort a $7.9 million grant through the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant program.
The TIGER grant award will be used to revitalize the Second Street Corridor of the Commonwealth’s capital to boost economic development, create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists, and promote connectivity to surrounding areas.
Mayor of Frankfort, Bill May said, “I cannot begin to thank Congressman Barr and his staff for their support in making this project a priority. From the first phone call I had with Congressman Barr, he immediately offered his full support and has worked diligently ever since to assist and promote our efforts with the Kentucky delegation, including Leader McConnell and Senator Paul, and the Department of Transportation. This grant will make Second Street a safer passage for children going to and from school and is the first step in opening this corridor for redevelopment.”
“The Franklin County community is honored to be the recipient of the federal TIGER grant for the Second Street corridor,” said Franklin County Judge Executive Huston Wells. “We are eagerly anticipating the bright future for our historic downtown. I would like to personally thank Congressman Andy Barr for his commitment and support for this project. Without his support, we realize we would not have received this grant. The improvements made possible through the TIGER grant, along with the revitalization of the Capital Plaza, will enhance our capital city.”

The Second Street Corridor is a gateway to our Capitol and its revitalization will provide new economic opportunities for businesses while also increasing safety for our children who attend school along the corridor and the residents in the area. The city of Frankfort is poised for an economic renaissance and these TIGER funds are a critical part of that plan. Our sincere thanks to Representative Barr who was instrumental in helping land this grant for the citizens of Frankfort and the State of Kentucky.”
