Congressman Andy Barr (KY-06) today participated in a bill signing ceremony for The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act. The legislation marks the most significant effort yet by Congress to combat the growing epidemic of drug abuse, especially the abuse of opioids and heroin.
“The bill we are sending the President today reflects the priorities and needs outlined to me by the Sixth District Drug Abuse Task Force,” said Congressman Barr. “Kentucky has been particularly hard hit by the growing epidemic of drug abuse. I am proud that proposals by our task force of Kentuckians have been included in this package which is now likely to become law. Federal legislation alone will not solve this crisis, but this bipartisan effort will have a meaningful impact in ensuring those on the frontlines will have the resources and tools to help more of our fellow citizens recover from addiction and lead productive and dignified lives.”
The Sixth District Drug Abuse Task Force was established by Congressman Barr in May 2015 to bring together individuals with diverse backgrounds in law enforcement, education, recovery, healthcare, and prevention. The Task Force is charged with developing specific recommendations for action at the federal level to help combat drug abuse in Kentucky.
The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act was passed by the House last week by an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 407-5. This vote follows months of work done by both chambers to stop the nationwide opioid epidemic.
