Berea, KY — Today, U.S. Congressman Andy Barr (R-KY-06) announced that he has secured $1,000,000 in federal funding for the Kenway Extension for Community Safety and Mobility, a key infrastructure project led by the City of Berea.

Barr secured the funding through the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations Act, 2026. He voted for the appropriations package earlier this month, and President Trump recently signed the funding bill into law. This federal investment will support the construction of a new access road, multi-use trail, and parking lot serving Dixie Park, Roselawn, and other Sixth District communities.

Currently, Dixie Park and Roselawn are home to approximately 1,000 residents and seven businesses, where they share only a single access point, creating safety concerns and limiting mobility. The Kenway Extension will provide a second access route, improving emergency response times, traffic flow, and access to nearby employment centers that support roughly 3,500 jobs in the surrounding area.

“Investing in infrastructure that improves safety and connectivity is a top priority for the Sixth District,” said Congressman Barr. “The Kenway Extension will enhance emergency preparedness, ease traffic congestion, and strengthen economic opportunity for Berea residents and local businesses.”

“This project is essential for supporting Berea’s continued growth,” said Mayor of Berea, Bruce Fraley. “I am very grateful for the work put in by Congressman Barr and his staff members who have worked on this.  This funding will definitely be put to good use for a greatly needed project.”

“This investment represents a major step forward for public safety and mobility in Madison County,” said City Administrator, Shawn Sandlin. “The Kenway Extension will improve emergency access, reduce traffic challenges, and provide safer routes for residents, workers, and visitors. We appreciate Congressman Barr’s leadership in delivering federal resources that directly benefit our communities.”

“I have lived in Berea my entire life and I have always felt a second entrance was needed off Kenway. I truly feel this will be a great improvement for this area for convenience, traffic flow, and safety,” said State Senator Jared Carpenter (R-KY-34). “The Kenway Extension solves a real, on-the-ground problem. Congressman Barr understood the urgency here and secured funding that will give families, first responders, and local business safer, more reliable access.”

“This project opens things up — for emergency response, for daily travel, and for connecting residents to jobs nearby. I appreciate Congressman Barr for pushing this through the THUD process and making sure Berea’s needs were heard at the federal level,” said State Representative Josh Bray (R-KY-71).
