Editor’s Note: U.S. Congressman Andy Barr (KY-06) speaks on the House of Representatives floor on his vote in support of establishing the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party on January 10, 2023.

Washington, D.C.— House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) appointed U.S. Congressman Andy Barr (KY-06) to the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).  Congressman Barr will maintain his positions as a senior member on the House Financial Services and Foreign Affairs Committees.

“I am honored to be appointed to the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party by Speaker Kevin McCarthy,” said Congressman Barr.  “The strategic competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party is the most critical international challenge of our generation.  As a senior member of both the House Financial Services and Foreign Affairs Committees, I will be laser focused on countering the CCP’s economic warfare against the West.  Specifically, I will work to stop the CCP’s theft of intellectual property and forced transfer of technology, implement greater U.S. safeguards to block malign CCP foreign investment in the United States, and protect American investors from unwittingly financing CCP military, surveillance, and technology companies that threaten our national security.”

“The Chinese Communist Party poses the greatest geopolitical threat of our generation. Congress must do more if we want to ensure America stays ahead in this strategic competition, which is why under a Republican majority we made it a priority to establish the Select Committee on China,” said Speaker McCarthy.  “To effectively carry out the mission of this committee, we need experienced lawmakers who possess a unique understanding of the CCP threat.  That is why I am proud to have appointed Andy Barr.  His expertise in the region coupled with his previous work in leading the Financial Services Subcommittee on National Security, International Development, and Monetary Policy will prove vital to the committee’s work.  There is no question, Andy will be committed to strengthening and securing America’s future on the world stage.”

“Congressman Barr has been at the forefront of countering the CCP’s malign influence and economic agenda in Congress,” said Congressman Mike Gallagher (WI-08), who will serve as Chairman of the Select Committee.  “As a member of the House Foreign Affairs and Financial Services Committees, he understands how the CCP has exploited our financial system and supply chains and will play a valuable role in advancing policies that help the U.S. push back.  I’m excited to welcome him to the Select Committee.”
